Aim: To begin to construct the promotional website for your new band/film.
Unfortunately we have to postpone the iWeb tutorial. However this isn't a big deal. As you have already demonstrated a good understanding of Photoshop you will now be creating a new photoshop document for your website template. We will be able to import this into iWeb later (well that's the plan!).
Your first task is to open photoshop and create a new project (File > New).
Now you must name your project and decide on the dimensions of your website. We will have a discussion about this.
Q&A Do you mind scrolling up/down? Does size depend on content? What about the technology your audience are using to access your site? Fluid or fixed?
You are all designing a website with fixed dimensions. I will go through your choices.
Once you have decided then you need to set your dimensions for the project.
You are now ready to get started.
Homework: You have so much to do and time is running out. Print productions should be nearing completion.

The final deadline for the Critical Investigations is 17th February. (4 weeks).

Aim: To continue with your screenplays.
We will be in C5 today as C1 is out of use.
You should have brought your coursework to this lesson. Remember you will now be given my lessons as well as Ms Terrace's to complete this coursework.

Period 5 - 11 Media
Aim: To check progress so far and to submit booklets.
You are now behind with coursework and we have spoken about our concerns.
You must film next week and I will want to see evidence from all of you. These trailers take an age to edit so please do not fall into the trap of thinking these can be quickly put together. Therefore all lessons should now be on filming and editing. Those of you who have still to book a camera may be provided with one during lessons and you will have to make do with filming around school during lesson time. It is your choice but I do suggest you get organised and get filming now. If there is no evidence of filming next week then you will have to re-plan your ideas to fit in with filming in lessons/school, which could mean some of the work done so far is useless.
This is a serious warning.

Last lesson you took your shots and now you need to put them together to create meaning for your audience. Focus on selection and then organisation. You have all had a tutorial on Final Cut so you now need to create a new project and upload your work to it.

On the board: Think of a DVD you have bought or rented. List the reasons for your purchase/rental. Share reasons and discuss. Write the key points down. e.g Fan, enjoyed at the cinema, Star, director & commentaries, extras etc. Why are DVDs so popular?
What do the initials DVD stand for? Explain how the disc is an optical disc storage format – way of storing video/moving image. Q What is the next generation of Discs called that are High Definition?
Why are DVD covers important. On the board. Think about the CONCEPTS. You are to make notes in your books. Remember you will need these notes to write your essay!
There are therefore two very obvious reasons why a DVD cover is required - what are they? Discuss. Focus : Protection & Persuasion.

You have now planned the first section of your essay. The purpose of the opening is to establish the topic and our understanding of DVD covers. This should contain the following information:

Aim: The Creative Project - Understanding how shots create meanings and responses.
Explain the aim and recap types of shots etc. Q&A. As an example we are going to watch an extract from La Jetee (1962). This is a short film constructed almost entirely of still films. Aim: To understand the requirements of the controlled assessment and to analyse the front covers of a range of DVDs
I will be distributing a cover sheet for your coursework. We will read through this together. Look at the checklist and discuss. These must be present in your final coursework assignment as evidence of research and pre-production planning.
After I have clarified the requirements of the assignment we will begin to analyse some front covers together. You will be given examples to label and these can then be included in your pre-production work.
Look at the example below

A slogan/tagline on the front
Quotations from film reviews/awards won

Clue to character and narrative development (check your blurb on the back)

Period 4 - 12 Film
Aim: To Introduce Angels With Dirty Faces and understand developments in the classic phase of the gangster genre.
Recap the main features of the classic phase as seen in The Public Enemy. Watch the opening scene of the film. Q&A What are the main similarities and differences of this film to the previous text?
Think about:
Similarities - Urban setting established, crowded dense environment to set up themes of poverty, class etc, 2 male protagonists, wise talking, working class costumes and props such as cigarettes. Chronological narrative - see boys young therefore expect to see them develop (rise and fall structure) Themes of loyalty - Rocky saves Jerry, Warner Bros, Star system - Cagney and Bogart. Seen involved in criminal activity - establishes key themes of law and order. Dualistic characters - Rocky/Jerry, Gangster/Priest, the list goes on...

Differences - Change in tone, representation of the gangster - attitudes to Rocky Sullivan very different than to Tom Powers. The film often described as a social problem film - highlights social issues such as living conditions, poverty, depression which the audince could identify with (historical, economic context), therefore audience much more sympathetic to Rocky. The treatment of women has changed - Laurie gets him back.
Can you think of any more? You should write up your findings.

Before we look at the opening of the film I want us to read the handout Film & The Social Union together so you have a good awareness of the film's social and cultural context.

We will now watch the opening sequence. Make note of all of the film making techniques you notice.

To increase your knowledge of the features photoshop

Mr Moore will be demonstrating photoshop today. It is vital that you listen carefully. You will all be using photoshop to complete your productions. Remember you will be using original images and you will need to edit these e.g change backgrounds, colours, sizing etc.

Mr Moore will go through the key features and tools and demonstrate how to use them appropriately. You will be given an opportunity to 'play' later so please follow the instructions given and complete the tasks set in the tutorial.
I do not want to see or hear a mobile phone/device.

Homework: You should be filming, taking photographs and ensure your content for the print work is completed. You will be able to start making your print productions now!

Aim: To work independently on your creative work - DVD cover design.
Firstly I want you to check you have everything in your portfolio (Plans, sketches, photo doc, planning sheet etc) If you are unsure then ask/check the blog for the list of contents.

You must try to complete your DVD cover in Photoshop. Find suitable background layers for your design and remember the skills you learned during the 'Hellcopter' tutorial. Look at the materials in the tutorial folder for ideas of layout. If you get to a tricky bit then ask for help.

When you have finished your DVD cover then you are to save and then print a copy to insert into a box. This should then be submitted to me.

Homework: You should ensure all work is up to date.

Period 2 - 11 Media
Aim: To begin your productions/complete the pre-production booklets
I know some have you have filmed this week. If you have you need to see me/Mr Moore as soon as possible.
If you have still to begin your productions then you are now falling behind. Your mocks begin this week and before we know it we will be breaking up for Christmas. You must arrange to film asap and book the necessary equipment.
If you cannot edit today then you will be expected to ensure all tasks in the booklet are completed to the standard expected.

Aim: To recognise the role of documentary and propaganda until the Nazi regime.
Today we will be focusing on the German film Triumph of the Will.
To understand the background of film under the Nazi regime we will read the handout together. Remember contextual factors are important when looking at the differences in documentaries.

Aim: To work independently on your creative work - DVD cover design.
Last lesson you all took your own original images for your DVD cover. These should be seen on the desktop of your iMac when you log in. Remember the iMac you were working on. There are 3 things I want you to focus on:

Firstly, place your images - all of them whether you use them or not - into a blank word document titled My original images. Make sure your name and date is also at the top. You should write underneath each shot the type of shot and how it could be effective in helping to attract audiences/sell copies of your DVD. Print off your work and submit to me.
Next, I want you to check you have everything in your portfolio (Plans, sketches, photo doc, planning sheet etc) If you are unsure then ask.
Finally, once you are up to date you may continue with your DVD design in Photoshop. Find suitable background layers for your design and remember the skills you learned during the 'Hellcopter' tutorial. Look at the materials in the tutorial folder for ideas of layout. If you get to a tricky bit then ask for help.
The DVD should be completed at the end of tomorrow's lesson.

Homework: You should ensure all work is up to date.

Aim: To organise your DVD cover photoshoot
Those of you who didn't get do their photoshoot last lesson will do theirs today - I hope you have come prepared!
Remember once you have taken your photos you need to put them into a word document as evidence of planning. It will also demonstrate your technical skills as you will be importing the images into your DVD cover template and manipulating them.
Remember if you are missing any of the things below you need to get these finished and submitted asap.

2 X DVD covers labelled - key features identified
A list/mind map of the main codes & conventions of DVD covers
The planning sheet (title, cast, certificate etc - see below for details)
Your plans/sketches for your own dvd cover design
A document containing all of your images taken in the TV studio/or other original images for your dvd cover whether they will be seen/used on the final dvd cover or not

If you do not hand these in you will be in detention tomorrow night.

If you have done the tasks above then you should be actually producing your DVD cover. You have the template so get going with it.
Homework: Make sure you have all the pictures needed for the DVD cover. Find your background images and save them on a pendrive or email them to yourself to save time next lesson. You can take pictures on your own cameras and bring in the memory cards/images you require. Don't forget these will need to be added to the document with your other images.

Aim: To recognise the importance of storyboarding and to begin storyboarding a sequence.
Q&A What is a storyboard? What does a storyboard contain? Who are they for? One of the key features is information about the camera. Draw examples of these shots together on the board.

CU side-on tracking shot of a woman walking across a car park. She thinks she hears something and turns.
MS rear angle. Slow zoom into CU on face. She turns back.
POV tracking shot as she approaches the car.
MS ground level from far side as she bends to look for keys.

Use abbreviations (CU, LS, OSS, POV etc). Read worksheet 16 together. Discuss how the description of shots reveals narrative, clues to genre etc. Discuss how these shots could be represented on a storyboard. Watch the extract from The Descent. Students are to make a sequence of the the 10 shots they feel represent the scene. Swap ideas, give feedback to each other. Watch the scene again with the storyboard sequence. Discuss. Stress the importance of developing a sequence.
You now need to storyboard your trailer. You will be continuing this next lesson.
Homework: You need to have a sequence of shots for your storyboard. Type your sequence (should be at least 15 shots) and this will be handed in with your finished storyboard next week.

I will be returning your research portfolios and you should review your work carefully noting if any changes are required.
You have all been given information on how to write your intentions document but if you need help or if you'd like me read a draft then ask. If you have done the intentions you all have pre-production planning to do. There are useful websites on storyboarding with good examples too if you need look at how to draw a particular shots etc.

I will be returning work to those of you who handed Intentions or research in to me. You should be prepared to improve this.
I am going to focus on storyboarding today. Q&A What is a storyboard? What dies it contain? Who are they for?

A sequence of drawings which represents the sequence of shots in the finished screen work
Shots, duration, sound FX, dialogue, Movement of objects, camera etc

When you are including information about the camera it is important that you cover 3 aspects:

Shot
Angle
Movement

We will discuss the aspects above. Q&A But how can you draw the shots? How can you show movement on a storyboard? Have a go at drawing:

A low angle shot of a building. The camera will slowly tilt down from the roof to the entrance of the building
Mid shot of a man sat at a desk. Zoom in on his face.
Tracking mid shot of a car.
Extreme close up of a victim's eye. Zoom out to a head and shoulder shot which reveals she is dead.

Q&A. Volunteers will come up to the front and explain their ideas and draw them on the board. I will then show you how I would do this. Remember you don't have to be an artist! N0w you know what a storyboard is and how to graphically explain camera and movement I want you to begin sequencing your film trailer. In order to do this you must clearly break down your trailer into a series of shots and place them in the order in which you want them to appear to your audience. These should also include any titles which will appear on the screen such as the studio, director, stars, tagline, release date etc. Firstly write:

Select & order into a sequence

Only now can you produce a storyboard. remember you should already have written a summary of your film for your intentions! You have all been given storyboard sheets by Mrs Terrace. so get started!

TASK: Next Tuesday you will present your idea to the rest of the class. This should be a ppt oresentation and should cover at least the bullet points on the sheet we've just read.
We will look at a few examples together.
You will notice when you look at previous coursework folders that most have produced an extended step outline. I've photocopied the guidance for you provided by the exam board. Read & discuss.

Aim: To apply your understanding of narrative and to create your own narrative for a new feature film.
Before you start recap what we did yesterday. Students should read their notes on narrative from last lesson.
TASK: Write a plot synopsis of their own new film remembering to clearly establish the genre, setting, characters and narrative structure.

Once you have a plot synopsis you should then create an original title, cast the film and write the information which will appear on the back of you own DVD cover. You should look at the examples given last lesson. All of this work will be part of the coursework assignment and so should be typed up in neat for homework. Use the following layout:

What is narrative? How is the narrative told? Remember we are focusing on how narratives are organised and the techniques used by producers to engage and inform audiences.
Look at the DVD covers on the Media i-net. In what ways does the DVD cover help the audience to understand what the film is about? What features are used?
Today we are going to focus on narrative so you will be able to create your own narrative for your own film dvd. In order to do this we first need to look at how narratives are structured.

This was the question I set:

'Documentary makers shape spectators' views on their subjects and tell them what is real and not.' Consider this statement in relation to your experience of documentary film. Refer in detail to Capturing the Friedmans.

Now we will complete our viewing of Super Size Me. I will be referring to the ppt from last lesson so make sure you have all read this - particularly my notes on documentary style, technique and persuasion. Discuss the appeal and success of the film with a younger audience.

Aim: To understand the practical production part of the coursework module.
Today we will be looking at some sample work to get you all thinking about your own production work. First we shall watch a few films and then take a look at the planning involved.
Over the half term I would like each of you to begin planning your Film Practical.

Decide whether you are going to produce a sequence from a film OR a short film
When you have decided then you need to research e.g the genre, codes & conventions, techniques, reference texts & filmmakers, look at style etc.
You now need to sketch your ideas. Remember even if you are only filming a sequence you should still have the whole narrative.
Write a brief synopsis - events, characters etc and give your film a title.

When we return we will begin our pre-production planning.

Homework: I will want to see your work when we return. Bring your Aims & Context document and a plot synopsis to the next lesson.
Aims & Context - a short essay to explain what you are doing, what it is, who it is for etc Focus is on describing your film, type, genre, intended audience and then to explore the impact of your film on the audience. Last lesson, you developed a story around a title which was given to you. You should have broken down this story into at least 10 camera shots which you will be filming today. Before you will be allowed to film I want everyone to ensure they have a list of shots for their film shoot.
When I have seen this your team will be issued with a camcorder and tripod. You must listen and carefully observe a demonstration of how to use the equipment. Finally I will clarify the RULES and you will be given 40 minutes to film your project.

Aim: To develop your awareness of the similarities and differences between The Public Enemy and Goodfellas and to recognise the importance of stars to the film industry.
Firstly I will be dividing the class into 2 groups.

One group is to make a list of ALL the 'things' the 2 films have in common (Similarities/Compare)
The other group will make a list of ALL the 'things' which are different (Differences/Contrast)

You will then be brought together and placed into pairs and you are to compare & contrast your findings. Make sure you tell each other what you have found. Now can you account for the similarities & differences?
We will all come together to share the key points so be prepared to contribute. If you have missed anything from your list then make sure this is added.
One of the key aspects you are to focus on is the film industry. This can account for some of your similarities & differences.
I will recap the importance of stars and we will discuss how each of the films use stars to target audiences.

Aim: To develop practical skills: An introduction to photoshop.

Today's lesson is very important. You will be starting your first coursework assignment. This assignment will involve:

A written analysis of 2 DVD covers (500 words): Focus on Media language and Audience.
A design piece: Designing and producing a DVD cover for a new film.

In order to complete the design work you will be using photoshop.

This DVD cover must be for a film of your own creation. You will select a genre, create a title, tagline, write the narrative outline and blurb for the back of the cover and be taking original images and manipulating them using photoshop. Everything is to be your own work and it must be completed in lessons NOT at home.

Mr Moore will be demonstrating. You are to listen carefully and observe. You will be introduced to the tools and you will all create a a new project. Make sure you follow the instructions - and keep up!
Homework: In preparation for next lesson you are to find 2 DVD covers (front & back covers required please) and label the key features. This work will form part of your planning and will be assessed as part of our coursework.

Aim: To Media Language (focus on camera) and to develop an understanding/to build confidence when using the filming equipment.
Revision - Media language
We will read together and discuss. You should print a copy of this for your folder.
One of the most important aspects of your practical work is your ability to tell a story, introduce characters and to establish genre through the use of camera. This is cinematography. You are now going to see a demonstration by Mr Moore. He will explain:

How to book equipment

How to set up/organise a 'shoot'
How to use the equipment
A review of the different camera shots, angles, movement etc.

The things to avoid when filming - BAD camera techniques - common mistakes that we do not want to see

You are going to be placed into teams and given a brief scenario. Working together cooperatively you are to break the scenario down into 8-10 shots which you will film.
Remember: I will be assessing your work on how effectively you use camera shots, position, angle and movement to create meaning.

Aim: To recognise the features of different documentary modes and to apply to Super Size Me.
In the first part of today's lesson I will be going through the different modes of documentary (AGAIN!) and the features which indicate the mode. I will also be discussing some of the contextual factors and development of the modes.

We will complete the task together on the worksheets - identifying the documentary modes of the films we have seen and those in your own case studies. Finally I will introduce our next text: Super Size Me (2004), Morgan Spurlock. We shall watch the opening chapters and discuss.

First I shall return your essays. Please read my comments carefully and think about how you can improve. I shall also discuss issues of structure and organisation with you all.
You should all have brought with you some primary texts to begin your platform and content research.
Make sure you are using the checklists provided.
Homework: It is expected that over half term you will be gathering research and analysing a range of texts. You should bring all your work to each lesson after half term.

Period 4 - 13 Film
Aim: To develop an understanding of how audiences are engaged with documentary focusing on distant & present techniques.
Before we look at another text I just want to recap how Errol Morris uses mode of address. Think about the extract from The Fog of War we saw a couple of weeks ago.

In a recent interview, Nick Wilson interviewed Morris on his new documentary Tabloid at the Toronto Film festival, using the Interatron-technique.
It works as follows:

Two through the lens prompters are attached to two video cameras. One is aimed at an interviewer, and the other frames the subject. Interviewer and subject see each other in the prompters and they converse.

What impact does this have on the spectator?

We will now focus on some of the techniques of documentary realism. Read the handout together. Clarify Present and Distant techniques when discussing audience.

Present: intimate, emotional reaction, close engagement with the subject
Distant: removed from the subject, detachment necessary to remain objective and able to make a judgment about the information presented

You will now be shown the opening of the documentary film Spellbound (Jeffrey Blitz, 2003). You are to make notes on the following:

What different documentary and filmic techniques are used
Is the audience aware of the filmmaker?
Which techniques are 'present' and 'distant'?
Why did the filmmaker begin the film with Angela?

Discuss and share ideas.

Aim: To recognise the importance of genre when planning and researching your film trailer.
Our focus today is on answering the following 2 questions:

How and why is the concept of genre important to institutions?
How and why is the concept of genre important for audiences?

Q&A What is genre? Ensure you all have a clear definition. Focus on the key terms: codes & conventions. What are codes & conventions?
How do you make the decision whether to watch/buy a film or not? Is it by actor, director, genre, how good the trailer is? Think about the films you like to watch. Do you have a favourite type or category of films? Why does it appeal to you?

There is a key debate when we are studying the concept of GENRE.
Are all genre films the same? Or do they change & develop over time? What do you think? Can you provide examples?

Remember genre films require REPETITION & DIFFERENCE

You are to follow the link below and read carefully. This will help you to answer the questions and reinforce what we have just discussed.

Aim: To work independently on your pre-production portfolio.
I will be expecting to see the progress you have made to date with your MEST pre-production portfolio. I will try to speak to each of you during the lesson to discuss your ideas and to identify any concerns you may have. This is your opportunity to ask if you are unsure about anything. I want everyone to know exactly what needs to be done over half-term.
Use the handouts provided in previous lessons - in particular checklists to ensure you are covering key concepts and fulfilling expectations of what a successful portfolio should look like. I will also bring some examples to the lesson for you to look at.

Period 2 - 12 Film
Aim: To complete our analysis of Goodfellas and to identify aspects of film language and film technique which engage the audience.
Firstly lets recap what we saw yesterday. What are your views on the film? What did you like/dislike? What was the best part of the film? Why was the film a critical and commercial success? Give examples and support your views.
One of the main aspects of film language you should explore is the editing of Goodfellas.

KEY TERM - AXIS (an imaginary line between characters that exists in the scene.
Can you provide examples of each of the following editing techniques:

180 Degree Rule: Axis of action. It ensures spatial continuity. Never cross the line between characters which then destroys the realism.
30 Degree Rule: Cuts must move by at least 30 degrees to avoid a 'jump cut' which could make the spectator confused.
Shot Reverse Shot: Otherwise known as 'over the shoulder shot' with close up on the protagonist. The shot is on the opposite end of the axis of action.
Montage: Scenes whose emotional impact and visual design are achieved through the editing together of many brief shots.
Spatial Axes of Action: This is where there are 2 different axis of action in the same setting (such as 2 different conversations at 2 tables in a coffee shop at the same time.)
Planes of Action: This is where a set of scenes that take place in different settings, but at the same time, are inter-cut together to create tension and excitement.
Temporal Axes: This is where 2 scenes in the same location but at different times are edited together (normally used as flashbacks)
Temporal Planes of Action: This is where you have 2 different settings at 2 different time periods.

We are now going to look very closely at the last 20 minutes of the film. You are to make detailed notes focusing particularly on aspects of film language.
Key points include:

Editing techniques - narrative meaning created
Use of non-diegetic music (Parallel and contrapuntal)
Editing rhythm - slow motion
Camera (shot, angle, movement)
Lighting (high/low key and use of colour)
Titles
Performance signs
Shot composition - symmetrical/asymmetrical

Aim: To demonstrate and understanding of Mise-en-scene by providing an analysis of Mise-en-scene used in Van Helsing.
I will show the the sequence again to refresh your memory. You may wish to write some more notes in your exercise books.
Using these notes and the table you completed yesterday you should provide a written response. Your title is:

A detailed analysis of how mise-en-scene is used in the opening of Van Helsing.

Aim: To recognise the importance of research for the MEST2 portfolio

Q&A Recap the briefs. Students are to firstly identify the needs of the brief they have chosen. What information are you given. Remember you must produce 2 artefacts so look closely at each! Students should make a list of bullet points.

The first thing we need to do is to understand why we need to do research and what we need to research. Share ideas. Go through the sheet together. You can find a copy below:

MEST2 - RESEARCH

Focus on the brief - you should have identified the parameters. What did you have on your list? Add to the sheet if you have other ideas. Now look at your other platform. Repeat the exercise. You should now have a clearer understanding of the type of research you need to do.
Remember - You need to have a range of PRIMARY TEXTS.
This will enable you to analyse the media, content, codes and conventions of the format and chosen genre etc. Q&A. Read the next part of the handout together. This offers you more detail. You are now ready to begin your research.
Remember: You need to do the research to enable you to clearly state your aims and intentions. For the remainder of the lesson you are to use the internet to research institution. Use your brief, your list and the handout. Focus on:

Who is the institution? What is their brand? Who is your competition? Investigate the marketplace. Give an overview of the industry you are working in. What is the process? What are the rules and regulations? What is your budget? How will this affect your planning and production? Issues of censorship, film classification process etc. Marketing, distribution, exhibition should all be researched and evidence provided.
What do we mean by independent? Look at examples of independent British films. What do they have in common? What do you notice about style, content etc? How are they different from high concept blockbusters? Is the process different? Research independent filmmakers and their work. Were they successful? How?
How does the size of the budget influence your ideas and the finished product? Research the UK Film Council to get information about budgets and lottery funding. Look at other films, which have received lottery funding. How did they get it? How were they selected?

Homework: You must keep all of your info and write up your findings. How will your findings influence your ideas and decision making? You should ensure this part of your portfolio is completed for next week. In next weeks lessons you will be working independently. Remember to bring with you any primary texts you want to analyse in the lessons or you could start your audience questionnaires.

Aim: To continue with your own research into the codes & conventions of trailers.
In your exercise books you are to make a list of all the codes & conventions of trailers you can think of. You have 5 mins. Who has the most? We will now share our ideas. If there is anything you have missed ensure you write it down.

You may wish to be a mind map, a piece of continuous writing or a series of lists under headings. The choice is yours. Whatever you decide keep it neat and tidy. Your next goal is to finish your analysis of your 2 chosen trailers and write up in neat either in your booklets or type up neatly.

Aim: To understand the term Mise-en-scene and to develop analytical skills in examining mise-en-scene in a media text.
Discuss the definition of mise-en-scene: The arrangements of properties, scenery in an image. A French word for 'what is in the frame'.
Firstly we will look at the main aspects of mise-en-scene: Setting, Props, Non-verbal Communication, Dress/costume/make-up, colours.

Now using the plan I gave you last time to help your structure your response (Point, Example, Explain, Explore, Evaluate) read the paragraph again and see if you can break the response down in the stages. Once you have a grade you should now write a target to help you improve your written analysis next time.

Aim: To recognise the codes & conventions of trailers and to develop analytical skills.
Firstly I want you all to follow the link below and complete the activity. Match the sentences.

Trailer conventions - Matching activity

Listen carefully as I clarify the terms codes & conventions.
We will now look at a couple of film trailers together. Make a list of the codes and conventions. Think about what trailers have in common.

1. Is there a common structure? Think about:

Opening: establishes setting and introduces character
Build-up: relationships established; development of characters and their world
Problem: a dilemma or series of complications: characters faced with an obstacle (or several) to overcome.There may be more than one ‘problem’ in the narrative
Events: a series of events as characters try to overcome obstacles and solve problems. Further complications may arise in the process

2. What is the function of the voiceover? Think about:

Helps us make sense of the narrative by giving us background information, such as where the action is set
Informs us about the characters
Showcases the stars appearing in the film
Gives us information about important production personnel such as the director and producer and their previous work

Look at a range of DVD covers using the internet and then select one you think is really effective and appealing for the audience. Complete the 4 tasks in your exercise books. Whatever isn't done is class is to be finished at home so use the lesson time wisely.

Look at the example you have chosen. Draw a plan of the layout and label the features. e.g title at the top, barcode, credit box, certificate etc. Use a full page in your exercise book and ensure you use a pencil and ruler for drawing the plan and a pen for labelling the features.

TASK 1: Essay for Tues 11 October. Analyse the opening of any film. You should focus on how the text creates meaning through the use of media language.
TASK 2: Homework for Thurs 6th October. Select any print media text and explore the concept of representation. You began this last lesson.

Period 2 - 10 Media
Aim: To complete your visual codes handout.
Your folders containing the booklets are in the cabinet at the rear of C5.
Find the list of technical terms in your booklets. Read carefully and identify which examples you still need to find. Go to google images and find examples and then important into your document/powerpoint. Make sure you have given each example a title (E.g Selective Focus, Asymetrical Mid shot) and that you have provided a description of how the technique creates meaning for the audience.
Keep your handout nicely presented. Remember there is a more detailed list of technical codes in the booklet to check you are using the right one!
If you complete your handout check you have completed the homework task set last lesson appropriately. You were asked to write an analysis of the opening of Twilight focusing on how the technical codes create meaning for the audience. Read through your work carefully. If this work needs to be re-written to include more detail then do so. Also make sure t is neatly presented. Although some of you began this last lesson it was untidy.

Essay. 'Documentary makers shape spectators' views on their subjects and tell them what is real and not.' Consider this statement in relation to your experience of documentary film. Refer in detail to Capturing the Friedmans.

Aim: To introduce the film text Goodfellas and produce a detailed textual analysis of the opening sequence.
As you know the text we will be comparing and contrasting to The Public Enemy is Goodfellas. I will introduce the text and its director Martin Scorsese. Brief background about him and his so-called style and you are to make notes. We will watch the opening together. As we do you are to make notes on how the genre and narrative are established. After our first viewing we will discuss our findings and begin thinking about how both texts establish the gangster genre. Remember to account for similarities and differences. Media Representation
Representation refers to the construction in any medium (especially the mass media) of aspects of ‘reality’ such as people, places, objects, events, cultural identities and other abstract concepts. Such representations may be in speech or writing as well as still or moving pictures.
The term refers to the processes involved as well as to its products. For instance, in relation to the key markers of identity - Class, Age, Gender and Ethnicity (the 'cage' of identity) - representation involves not only how identities are represented (or rather constructed) within the text but also how they are constructed in the processes of production and reception by people whose identities are also differentially marked in relation to such demographic factors. Consider, for instance, the issue of 'the gaze'. How do men look at images of women, women at men, men at men and women at women?

A key concern is with the way in which representations are made to seem ‘natural’. Systems of representation are the means by which the concerns of ideologies are framed; such systems ‘position’ their subjects.

Draw the table and ask students to think about how the other concepts affect the representation of characters and themes. Watch the extract from the film and students are to make detailed notes. Share findings and discuss each of the concepts in the table. Students are to provide detailed references to support their points. Q&A What is the genre? Who is the target audience? On sheet 4.3 you will see a set of definitions for the technical codes you are to use when analysing moving image texts. Read together.
Now you are going to view the opening of Twilight. Watch the extract carefully and try to identify the different technical codes used. Write your notes on the worksheet 4.4. Share findings and re-watch the extract.
When writing an analysis you must use your notes and remember the technical terminology. Let's look at an example together. To write a success analysis you should structure your paragraphs in the following way:

Point - make your point about the concept, code or issue
Provide an example - choose a textual example from the text to support your point
Explain - give a detailed explanation of your point and the meanings created by your chosen example
Explore - discuss the other possible meanings/significance of the example
Evaluate - discuss the strengths, weaknesses and overall effectiveness of the text in achieving it's aim and creating meaning for the audience

Using your notes have a go at writing a paragraph to analyse the extract from Twilight.You have 10 minutes. Now look at each others work and compare to the successful paragraph. How have you done?

First let's recap the important scene when Tom exacts revenge on Schemer Burns' Gang after the death of Matt. We will watch again and make detailed notes. Think about how aspects of film language are used to create meaning. What is significant about the scene? How is it important to narrative and genre? How would it appeal to audiences?
Q&A Why did the film not end here? Why did Tom survive this? Link to issues of ideology. Remember the wider social context. Now we will continue to watch the film and then provide detailed textual analysis.

Firstly look at the DVD cover for the film. Spend 5 mins reading this text and make a list of the codes and conventions which create meaning for you. Share your findings with the rest of the class. Discuss.
Read the DVD blurb together and discuss audience appeal, aim etc together.
I will distribute 2 sheets - One an Introduction to the film and the other a table. Your task is to consider the expectations raised in the opening sequence and think about the questions it sets up. What are your expectations of the film?
We will watch the opening 2 mins a couple of times. Q&A as we go through the key points in the table. You are to make notes in the right column. Discuss the bullet points on the sheet. We will now continue to read the film. You are to make notes on documentary techniques and your response as a spectator to the film. Think about your emotions, reactions etc to what you are seeing. Aim: To analyse a range of NDM texts and to compare to their print/broadcasting equivalents.
Quick recap of the homework to ensure we are all up to date. Today we will be applying our knowledge and understanding of of NDM texts and their common codes and conventions.
Now we will be continuing with our study of E-Media. Remember: To analyse an internet text we apply all the key concepts we covered last year. What are they? Our focus today is on how these internet texts create meaning for audiences. We will focus today on aspects of layout and design.
At the end of the powerpoint you will be given time to apply what you have learned to your example and present your findings to the rest of the group.

Finish the opening together. Students are to make notes on how they are able to categorise the text as a gangster film. Discuss findings.

This lesson you will each be given a booklet containing lots of worksheets and resources. These are to be kept safely inside your folders. At the front of the booklet is an outline of the course.
Turn to page 19. Last lesson I introduced the terms denotation & connotation. To recap this we will read the sheet together. Now look at the symbols and signs together.

Can you explain them in terms of what is denoted and what is connoted?

Turn to Handout 2.1 on page 14. Read the definitions together and ask for examples. Students should now spend 5 mins listing the texts they consume.

What do you think that phrase might mean?

Consider one of the first kinds of documentary – in fact one of the first kinds of film at all – the movies that earlier pioneers made outside factories at the end of a shift when large numbers of workers could be seen leaving for home. What aspects of this kind of simple filmmaking can be considered?

Actual (A) – in other words something that would have happened whether or not the camera was there?
Creative (C) – in other words affected by practical decisions made by the director/camera operator, and which had the effect of making the sequence more entertaining
Interpretive (I) – in other words affected by practical decisions made by the camera operator/director that might affect an audience's understanding of what they were seeing.

Look at the table provided. It sets out a series of factors that might have affected the end result of such a factory exit film and some of the ways in which an earlier filmmaker such as Georges Lumière working with silent film might have shot this sequence in 1895. Your task is to decide which of A, C or I relates most to each situation. Space is provided to explain your decisions. Sometimes more than one of these elements will apply at the same time.

I wanted to start this term with a very thought-provoking documentary film to get us back into our A2 study and Capturing the Friedmans certainly is!Firstly look at the DVD cover for the film. Spend 5 mins reading this text and make a list of the codes and conventions which create meaning for you. Share your findings with the rest of the class. Discuss.

I will distribute 2 sheets - One an Intro and the other a table. Your task is to consider the expectations raised in this sequence and think about the questions it sets up. I've put the bullet points of things to consider on the bottom of the sheet:

Period 2 - 13 Media
Aim: To monitor your own use of the media and to identify New/Digital Media Texts.
As we discussed last lesson we are surrounded by the media. Q&A. What media do you consume the most? Is your consumption of the media different to that of friends or family? Is there an age, generation, gender difference? Keep a diary of your media use. Then evaluate this use. To monitor your own use of the media answer the following questions

What media you consume?
How long you spend consuming?
Are you active or passive?
The impact of the media on you
Do you interact with the media?
Is it personalised? Are you a scheduler or controller?
Your own opinions/feelings about your media use

Now I want you to think about the different types of New/Digital Media texts that exist. What are their codes and conventions? In pairs identify and note at least 2 examples of NDM under the following headings (I will give you an example first to get you thinking):

E-commerce (Company/organisation)
Search Engine
Portal (Access to other websites)
Community (Local/national/global)

Write down the typical codes and conventions of each. Prepare to feedback to the rest of the group. Add notes to your own findings. To consolidate we will read the summary together.

Period 3 - 10 Media
Aim: To understand the key concept Media Language.
Media texts create meaning through their use of Media Language. All media texts are constructed of signs. Each sign has 2 parts:

A Signifier (physical)
A Signified (meaning)

Each sign creates meaning and when a sign is combined with another that meaning can change.
You are to copy the diagram from the board and listen carefully. Can you think of any sign that when put with another changes?
Some signs (and texts) can be described as polysemic as they can have numerous meanings and can be interpreted in different ways. Therefore every sign has 2 levels of meaning:

Denotation: Describes what the text is, what is there, the content etc.
Connotation: The meanings created, how the text is interpreted

Discuss and apply to the image opposite.

Now look at the image below. You have 2 mins to create a headline for the image. Share ideas. Q. Why is a headline needed?

The image can be interpreted in different ways. A headline ties down the meaning and so guides the audience how to read and understand it. This is called anchorage. The meaning has been anchored and now the image can only be read in one way. Q. How would the meaning change if the image was cropped?

These are the KEY WORDS learned today. Write them down clearly in your exercise books. You need to learn and spell these important terms.

Now we will see an extract from the film Chicago. You are to watch the clip carefully and select signs for each aspect of media language. Complete the table.

This extract is made up of many signs so you should have no problem finding examples to write and explain in your table!
We will then compare our examples.
